Canada Day Fireworks, Parade Parking in Port Credit

Have a Parking Plan for Canada Day in Port Credit

Update Canada Day July 1, 2014:
Canada Day Parade in Port Credit officially renamed The Hazel McCallion Canada Day Parade. See Paint the Town Red/ Facebook

Port Credit's celebration of Canada Day July 1 is one of the biggest in Mississauga, and even before the 11 a.m. start of the parade, parking spots fill up fast.

And after the fireworks show, they empty out even faster. Well, they would but for the massive traffic jam-gridlock especially on the west side of the river to Mississauga Road on both sides of Lakeshore. Being stuck in traffic for half an hour or so tends to take the edge off the magic.

So if you don't relish a carload of tired kids and cranky friends, or cranky kids and tired friends, plan ahead and feel justifiably smug when you negotiate your way in and out of Port Credit like a native.

Keep in mind that Lakeshore Road is closed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Front Street to Enola Avenue (the parade route), so there are fewer parking spots to be had and fewer options to leave during that time.

Lakeshore Road is the main road through the village, and congested at the best of times. During special events, such as Canada Day, it's even busier. Try to stay to side streets to save yourself the aggravation.

Have a plan for where to park according to when you plan to arrive, what events you plan to take in and where you want to go (east, west, north) when you leave.

Coming to the Parade / Daytime Activities Memorial Park

These events are between 11 a.m. to any time before the start of the fireworks show (variously shown as 'after dusk', after 10 p.m, and 'weather permitting') mainly around Memorial Park.

During the day, you should have a good choice of parking spots on either the west side or the east side of the Credit River bridge at the Lighthouse. BUT you have to be on whichever side of the Credit River before Lakeshore Road closes at 10 a.m., and you have to stay on that side of the river until it re-opens after the parade.

Along that route, since traffic cannot cross Lakeshore Road during the parade, you should decide if it is better for you to be on the north side of Lakeshore (leave via Hurontario) or the south side (leave via a 'snakes and ladders' route east past Enola.)

Coming to the Parade and Staying for the Fireworks

The time frame for these events is between 11 a.m and about 11 p.m. and if ever there was a time to park a few blocks away and walk to the Memorial Park area, this would be the time.

Why? During the day, visitors come and go, and parking spaces come available throughout the day whether on side streets or in the large parking lots. But when even more people show up to watch the fireworks, parking gets harder and harder to find.

Best to arrive a few hours ahead of the fireworks start time, and walk a few blocks. It will be faster and easier to get out of Port Credit when they are done.

For although people may arrive at different times throughout the day, you can bet the farm they will all want to leave the minute the last of the fireworks fades to black.

And that's when the gridlock sets in. Even intersections controlled by traffic lights won't help you then.

Decide ahead of time whether it's better for you to be on the East side or the West side when the fireworks are done. That of course depends on where home is, or where you are going next. And keep in mind that Mississauga Road north of the Lakeshore is only two lanes; Hurontario north of the Lakeshore is four lanes. Just saying.

 West Side of the River

Look for parking lots on Mississauga Road South at Saddington Park and on side streets (pay attention to No Parking signs)  Generally, parking is not that big an issue during the day, though it may take some time driving around to find a spot.

Parking availability in Marina Park (pictures here) right beside the Lighthouse or in the lot just south of Marina Park (towards the Lake) comes and goes throughout the day, with boat launching and charter fishing boat traffic all day and into the evening.

But in the hour or so before the fireworks' start time, when most of the boaters have gone, Marina Park will fill to overflowing, with space markings ignored, and vehicles crammed in with barely room to walk between them.

East Side of the River

On the east side of the Credit River, look for on-street parking where you can find it, and for parking lots near the LCBO and J.J.Plaus Park ( beside Snug Harbour). While it may be a little bit of a walk to get to Memorial Park, it could well be faster to leave after the fireworks.

Friends have parked closer to the Port Credit GO station (transit map here), and walked west towards the arena, which is on higher ground and offers a good view of the fireworks. When the show was over, they walked a few blocks back to their car, and left via Hurontario north and avoided much of the traffic.

Take Transit GO Train or the Bus

GO Transit: As of June 29, 2013,  GO trains run every 30 minutes along the Lakeshore route from Oshawa to Aldershot. And the Port Credit GO station is close to the action. See this post for details.

MiWay (Mississauga Transit) : See the route changes for the Parade here. Frequent service all day, every day, to points north including Square One terminal area.

Best thing about taking transit? You don't have to worry about a DD (designated driver).

What's Open in Port Credit on Canada Day

Many owner-operated shops will be open including Port Credit Emporium (behind NoFrills on Port Street) and Macondo Artisans (open from 10:00am – 2:30 p.m.) near the end of the Parade route where the giant cake cutting takes place outside La Villa Bakery.

A new children's shop is open --  The Ant and the Grasshopper  (Facebook page), just east of Hurontario on Lakeshore, and across from NoFrill, Seasons Boulangerie (Facebook page) "will be open tomorrow, Canada Day from 8am - 6pm."

Bars and restaurants, coffee shops and frozen yogurt shops are open. Look for a Timmie's on Lakeshore at Mississauga Road (Esso station) and east of Hurontario (Pioneer station). There's a Second Cup at NoFrills, and a Starbucks at the Lighthouse.

Snug Harbour on the riverfront will offer good views of the fireworks. I don't think they take reservations. First come, etc. The Breakwater at the Waterside Inn does.

So Happy Canada Day, everyone! See you in Port Credit!

Fireworks Port Credit Mississauga Canada Day July 1 2011

Canada Day Fireworks, Events July 1 2013
The schedule for 2013 is basically the same as in previous years, with Grand Marshalls Peel Regional Police Chief,  Jennifer Evans, and Chuck Jackson.

The 'Paint the Town Red' site has details.  For fireworks parking info see this post.
See you there!

Fireworks mark the finale of the Canada Day celebrations in Port Credit (Mississauga) Ontario on July 1, 2011, but the fun starts long before that!

Port Credit starts 'Painting the Town Red' with the Canada Day Parade at 11 a.m.
And to 'Make It Right', the Grand Marshals for the parade are Mike Holmes, host of Holmes on Homes and Holmes Inspection, and CityTV reporter Francis D'Souza.
Miss Canada 2010, Bridget Nickerson, and Miss Canada 2011 and Miss International Woman  hopefuls will take part in the parade, then 'meet and greet' at Memorial Park. The contestants are all cute as buttons, and will be in Port Credit all week leading up to the Miss Canada Pageant.

At 1 p.m. there's the giant Happy Birthday Canada cake cutting ceremony, the Port Credit Legion on Front Street South is hosting a BBQ, and there'll be music everywhere!

Does Port Credit know how to throw a party??!! You bet!

The Canada Day party goes on all day, until the Fireworks display show at 10:15 p.m.
Fireworks show usually starts when the sky is the darkest, about 10:20 p.m.  The official time is 10:15 p.m.  A few years ago, the show started earlier because rain was moving in from Oakville. That upset a lot of people who figured they show up last minute and missed them. portcreditbia

Here are some pictures and a short video from Canada Day 2010 in Port Credit. Each year, this event gets better! Kudos to the sponsors and volunteers.

Paint the Town Red Sign at Godfreys Lane Port Credit ON
Coming along Lakeshore Road West, from the west (Clarkson, Lorne Park), when you see this large red and white Paint the Town Red sign, you are only a few blocks from Memorial Park, the hub of the celebrations.

Look for parking on side streets west of the river / lighthouse to avoid the crush of traffic. (I like the Saddington Park parking area, at the end of Mississauga Road South.) Lakeshore Road will be closed from Stavebank to Hurontario (10:00 – 12:00 pm) and from Hurontario to Seneca (10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) for the parade and cake cutting ceremony.

Elvis and Cool Car Port Credit Canada Day 2010 Parade
Here are two of the dozens of participants in Paint The Town Red 2010. 'Elvis' is easy to spot, but I missed the driver/ sponsor of the car. The parade is set to start at 11 a.m. at Stavebank Road at Lakeshore, then head east along Lakeshore past Hurontario (Hwy 10) to Seneca Avenue. See Canada Day 2010 pics, info.

Pancake Breakfast Memorial Park Canada Day
In 2010, to mark Port Credit's 175 birthday, a pancake breakfast was served at Memorial Park gazebo. This year, the only way to get your pancake breakfast is to volunteer to help Paint The Town Red -- contact pc-volunteer AT bell DOT net if you can help set up, tear down, carry a banner, etc.

Canada Day Theme Clothing Port Credit Ontario
Port Credit becomes a sea of red and white on Canada Day, from clothing to hats to flags to the Giant Cake and even our Port Credit Lighthouse (home of the BIA).  This couple is walking along the path that goes under Lakeshore Road from Snug Harbour, Marina area to Memorial Park.

Tea Vendor at Marketplace Memorial Park Port Credit
Memorial Park is the hub of the action, with a main stage, smaller stages, a market area, and a playground, behind the newly renovated Port Credit Library. And you don't need a car to get to Port Credit: You can take the GO Train from Toronto or Hamilton, and Mississauga Transit (MiWay) has 'Buy One, Get One Free' on July 1, 2011 and students Grades 1 - 8 ride free when accompanied by a fare paying passenger.

Fireworks Finale Port Credit Canada Day
Not the best of shots, without a tripod, but I will post this picture anyhow as it shows the traffic along Front Street and Lakeshore, and the brightly lit landmark Lighthouse. Memorial Park is to the right rear of the lighthouse, and the dark area is mostly Credit River. The fireworks are set off at Memorial Park. Stake out your prime viewing area early; up the hill near the Arena is a good spot.
Sit and eat: Over a dozen of Port Credit's finest places to wine and dine will be marked with provincial flags for A Taste of Canada:  look for the flags of the provinces and check out A Taste of Nova Scotia, Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, B.C. Quebec, Yukon, and PEI!
Have a look at the Paint the Town Red site for details, and consider volunteering: Call Beatrice at (905) 599-2156 if you can help.

But do plan to make it an all-day event in Port Credit this Canada Day. It's a lot of fun, and a great party.

See Memorial Park video :

And if you find that you need a break in all the excitement, head a few blocks west to Brueckner Garden and smell the roses in full bloom this week.

Canada Day Mississauga Port Credit 175 Parade July 1 2010

July 1 2011 Here's the video of the parade on Canada Day one year later:

July 1 2010: Canada Day in Port Credit (Mississauga, Ontario) is a double celebration: Canada marks 143 years, and Port Credit marks 175! Yay, Us!!

Port Credit celebrated with a parade, a pancake breakfast, Heritage Mississauga displays, and lots of Canada Flags in a sea of red and white. And tonight there will be fireworks! (For all Mississauga fireworks, see http://snapshot-travel-blog.blogspot.com/2010/06/mississauga-canada-day-fireworks-events.html.

Here are some pictures of the Canada Day Events from earlier today.

Port Credit Canada Day Parade Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Representatives from various levels of government, and Port Credit committees started off the parade with a ribbon cutting ceremony. [Disclosure: I was one of five parade judges, and so these pictures were taken 'on the fly'.]

Therapy Dogs Lead the Way ~ Mississauga Canada Day Parade
St John Ambulance therapy dogs were among the first to parade down Lakeshore Road at Stavebank.

First Place ~ Port Credit Parade ~ Canada Day 2010
The giant birthday cake was an invitation to the cutting (and eating) of the Port Credit Canada Day birthday cake at the end of the parade. It also took first place ~ large floats.

Second Place Float  PCYC ~  Port Credit Yacht Club ~ Team Courage
Team Courage float for the Port Credit Yacht Club won second place. Floats were judged on Canadian content, originality and overall impression.

Third Place ~ Food Bank ~ Port Credit 175 Parade
Colorfully decorated in red and white streamers, these grocery carts garnered third place: What is more Canadian than Food Banks? The sobering impact of a shopping cart -- homeless or Land of Plenty.

Toronto Signals Band ~ Canada Day 2010 Parade Mississauga
One of the marching bands in the Canada Day parade was the Toronto Signals Band. The band has been in continuous operation since 1926 and is the duty band for 709 Toronto Communications Regiment at Fort York Armory.

Antique Fire Truck Port Credit Ontario
This old fire truck was one of many classic cars and trucks that joined the  parade, and the Shriners mini motorcycles, as always, were a crowd-pleaser.

Pancake Breakfast Port Credit Memorial Park
A pioneer style breakfast of sausages, beans and pancakes started the day right for early parade watchers and the many volunteers who arrived before 8 a.m. to set up for the festivities.

Heritage Mississauga Display ~ Early Port Credit Photos
Heritage Mississauga sets up displays at many Mississauga events, and it's always worth a look. They do a wonderful job of acquiring and preserving photos of early Mississauga villages and communities..

So far, Canada Day in Mississauga, and especially here in Port Credit, has been a lot of fun! And it's still going on, with live music, vendors, buskers and more. The fun goes on until the fireworks are finished lighting the night sky over Memorial Park, so come on down!

Hundreds of volunteers on a number of community groups have been working (and continue to work) to celebrate Port Credit's 175 birthday! Here are some of the great groups hosting events in the 'Village on the Lake':
If I've missed mentioning some of the community and business groups who have put their heart and soul into our 2010 events, I'll amend the list as soon as I can.

Now to get back to the Canada Day fun at Memorial Park!
See previous post for fireworks times and locations. In Port Credit, they are supposed to start at 10:15 p.m. but I'll get there early.

Canada Day Party Fireworks in Port Credit Memorial Park Mississauga Ontario

Update March 2010: Click on image to enlarge
Fundraiser for 2010 Fireworks in Port Credit: If you enjoy this annual event, then here's your chance to take part!

 -----original post July 1 2009---------
Here are some pictures I took today -- Canada Day -- at Port Credit Memorial Park in Mississauga, Ontario. Though rain clouds threaten to dampen the celebrations, we're all hoping that the rains hold off until after the fireworks tonight!

Memorial Park Port Credit

The main celebrations take place in and around Memorial Park, on the north side of Lakeshore Road East -- not east of Hurontario, the usual dividing line in Mississauga, but east of the Credit River.

Memorial Park entrance off Lakeshore Road East

As you can see on the sign, you cannot bring in your own fireworks or alcohol, for that matter. Another vantage point would be across the Credit River, on the west bank.

Small Crowd at Mississauga Memorial Park on Canada Day

Perhaps it's the weather, perhaps the economy, perhaps it's the Wednesday neither-fish-nor-fowl day, but the crowd seemed to me to be a lot smaller than last year, when it was hot and sunny and everyone was in a party mood.
Sea of Canada Day Red

A few visitors waved Canada Day flags, and more than usual, people wore red and white. Nice to see some cheery colors in an increasingly cloudy afternoon. Tents for vendors to set out their wares line the north walkway, towards the railway tracks.

Though I cannot be certain, I believe that there are fewer vendors and tents participating this year. Thank heavens for those who DID come out to mark the day. It would have been pretty bleak without them!

Port Credit Marina Docks Credit River

Take the walkway under the bridge at Lakeshore Road, past the painted murals, and come out on the Snug Harbour side, where the roses are blooming and the boats are tempting! The sign (top right) is a map of the Waterfront Trail, which passes along this walkway.

Port Credit Lighthouse Gets Facelift

The Port Credit lighthouse (replica) is a favourite vantage point to see over the park, and to take pictures of the waterfront area, but this year, it's not open while it's under renovation. Screen fencing runs all around it, and closes off access to the public washrooms on the ground level. I heard that the repairs are going to take some weeks yet, but I hope it is open again by Labour Day. I may be optimistiic.

Paint the Town Red Canada Day Program Port Credit

Here's the program for Paint the Town Red, the Port Credit Canada Day celebrations. You'll see the day ends with fireworks!! (Click on the image above for a larger view, then hit back button to return to this page.)

Unless it's pouring torrents around 9 p.m. tonight, I plan to head into town with golf umbrella and ground sheet, and find a good spot to mark the end of Canada's 142 birthday. Hope to see you there!

Canada Day Port Credit Memorial Park Pictures

Update July 1 2010 Canada Day July 1 2010 Events See you there!

July 1 2008
Picture perfect day, weather-wise here in Port Credit this Canada Day! (For info on Mississauga fireworks for tonight see earlier post) (and for info on Jack Darling park see later post) I had headed up to Lakeshore and Wenonah, to catch the cake cutting ceremony slated for noon. From my house, it's 3.3 km (2 miles) according to Google maps; I had really wanted cake to walk so far there and back!

Still setting up for the cake cutting : delayed
Just as I could see some balloons, etc that signalled the end of my quest, I met Ron, the intrepid publisher of the Mississauga News, who was leaving this venue, as, he said, the ceremony, etc had been moved back to 3 p.m. Since it had just gone noon, I couldn't see hanging about for 3 hours either, and missing all the fun back along the Credit River and Lakeshore.

Paint the Town Red - Even the White traffic lines!

I had noticed that the white traffic lines had been given red outlines, and every so often a tiny maple leaf was stenciled in the centre of the white line. From time to time, in the gaps between white lines, a small Canada flag appeared. Now I don't know about you, but I think that this shows great attention to detail. Well done, whoever!!

Memorial Park Port Credit Canada Day 2008

Back at the Credit River and Lakeshore, in Memorial Park, bands were playing, vendors vending and happy revellers reveling! A cool breeze blowing, flags waving, and sunny skies!

The Bouncing castle
Having a great time -- the skateboard park is just behind the castle.

Credit River Views From the Lighthouse in Port Credit

From the observation deck at the landmark Port credit lighthouse, I could see a boat ease its way up the Credit River past Memorial Park and the Canada Day celebrations.

Traffic on Lakeshore Mississauga - Park and Walk

I took this shot also from the lighthouse deck, above the bridge that crosses over the Credit River. Traffic had been heavy all day, and at the time of this photo, it was just past 2 p.m. By now, I had had a good walk around town, with a stop at Scoops for my fave cone, Polar Paws ice cream on a waffle cone.

Scoops, if you haven't guessed, is our local ice cream shop, just a block or so east from here, and the lines were out the door. A short while before, I had a nice chat with a couple who had come from North York and forest Hill - "just out for a drive" - and stopped to join in the fun. Most restaurants are open, or will open for their usual dinner hours, and, as Port Credit is a designated tourist zone, many shops are open as well.

I hope to head back around 9 p.m. to see the fireworks. Happy Canada Day, all!

From 2008 Canada Day:
This Canada Day (Tuesday, July 1, 2008) in Mississauga means fireworks and a huge concert at Port Credit Memorial Park (see Waterfront festival blog post for map -- it's the same location).

Here's a picture I took from Memorial Park, looking across the Credit River, south to the Port Credit lighthouse:

And I posted more pictures on July 1 here!

The Canada Day celebrations are billed as Paint the Town Red, and the fun starts at noon a few blocks east of the park on Lakeshore and Wenonah, with Mayor McCallion making the first cut of a giant cake. Fireworks usually start at dusk, and will be at the park. (See update for times, etc on the more pictures link)

See the Paint the Town Red site for all the details, and full concert listings. It's gonna be HUGE!

Now these sort of fun things go on all summer long down here in Port Credit. And I promise to stop going on and on about them all if you'll just pop over to the Port Credit BIA site, and either bookmark it or sign up for their email updates. Incidentally, the BIA offices are actually IN the lighthouse in the photo!

But wait: There are more fireworks in Mississauga on Canada Day!
  • In Streetsville, Canada Day is also the Village in the City's 150 Birthday! with fireworks scheduled for 10 p.m. See Canada Day in Streetsville for all the details.
  • In Mississauga City Centre area at City Hall west of Square One. Events from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. See Canada Day Mississauga for list of entertainers and kid's activities.
